TO HEADS OF CLASSICS, MEDIAEVAL AND MODERN GREEK DEPARTMENTS IN UK UNIVERSITIES:
The Hellenic Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the twenty second annual awards for the best doctoral theses in Hellenic Studies in respect of the year 2008.
In the ancient/classical category the award was shared by:
Dr A Fries of the University of Oxford for a thesis entitled “Euripides, Rhesus 565-996: Introduction and Commentary”
Dr I Galanakis of the University of Oxford for a thesis entitled “A study of Late Bronze Age Tholos Tombs in the Aegean 1700-1200BC”
In the Byzantine/medieval category the award was shared by:
Dr B Hallum of the Warburg Institute for a thesis entitled “Zosimus Arabus. The Reception of Zosimus of Panopolis in the Arabic/Islamic World”
Dr F Noussia of Royal Holloway for a thesis entitled “Byzantine Textbooks in the Palaeologan Period”
In the Modern Greek category the award was won by:
Dr M Kaliakatsos of the University of Birmingham for a thesis entitled “Dragoumis, Macedonia and the Ottoman Empire (1903-1913): the Great Idea, Nationalism and Greek Ottomanism”
The Foundation also expresses its gratitude to the chairman of the readers, Prof. E. L. Bowie, and all the readers for their work in making the awards possible.
